Gravity Information

The following information is legally relevant and is equivalent to the WELMEC approach.

Gravity Zones in Austria as published in the' Amtsblatt für das Eichwesen Nr.5/1996':

The gravity zones are valid for non automatic weighing instruments (NAWIs) of class III, depending on the number of divisions as given below (NAWIs adjusted to the given gravity value may be placed anywhere within the relevant zone):

  •  n = 1000: no marking of the place of use necessary
  • 1000 < n = 3000, one zone „Österreich (Austria)“ or „A“ with g = 9,8065 m/s² is sufficient
  •  3000 < n = 5000, three zones (see map with the coloured areas, the capital letters correspond to the nine provinces of Austria):

                     o Zone „B, NÖ, OÖ, W“ with g = 9,8073 m/s²

                     o Zone „K, S, ST“ with g = 9,8065 m/s²

                     o Zone „T, V“ with g = 9,8051 m/s²

  •  n > 5000: place of use to be marked (eg. „Innsbruck“)

Remark: For NAWIs of class IIII no marking of the place of use is necessary. NAWIs of class I or II have to be marked with the exact place of use.

There are no formal gravity zones established in Bulgaria.
Weighing instruments must respect the required mpe at the place of use.

The following is for information only:

There are no formal gravity zones established in Cyprus for NAWI, and there are no requirements for gravity zone stickers.
The instruments must respect the required mpe for new instruments at the place of their use.

No formal gravity zones exist yet.
The WELMEC Guide 2 approach is accepted.

Denmark has no gravity arrangement.
For information the following values could be given:

  • Denmark: 981584 milligal
  • Faroe Islands: 982077 milligal
  • Greenland south of 680: 982111 milligal
  • Greenland between 680 and 760: 982587 milligal
  • Greenland north of 760: 983036 milligal

In Estonia, all calculations for weighing instruments, where applicable, have to be carried out for value g = 9, 817823 m/s2 .

Gravity zones have not yet been introduced in Finland. We intend to define them here in Finland too, but the timetable is not known now. For the time being the information given in WELMEC 6 is still valid:

Finland does not have defined gravity zones for weighing instruments. Verified instruments can be moved from the intended place of use when applying the following rules:

  • Class (IIII) instruments, when verified for Finland, may be moved throughout the country.
  • Class (III) instruments with the number of scale intervals in < 3000 and class (II) instruments with n < 1000 may be moved at most 200 km from the intended place of use in a north-south direction.
  • Class (III) instruments with 3000 < n <5000 may be moved at most 100 km from the intended place of use in a north-south direction with the maximum difference of 250 m in altitude.
  • Class (III) instruments with n >.5000, Class (II) instruments with >1000 and Class (I) instruments may not be moved from the place of verification.

The following is for information only:

There are no gravity zones established in France for the regulation about NAWI and there are no requirements for zone stickers.

Manufacturers have the responsibility for bringing instruments within the maximum permissible errors for new instruments at the place of use.

To achieve this the new gravity concept as described in WELMEC Guide 2 is accepted in France.

Manufacturers may also define their own zones according to their marketing organisation.

Gravity information is not yet available for Greece on this website.

No formal gravity zones exist in Hungary.

Remarks: Hungary is a small flat land, therefore in most cases there isn't a big difference between gravity.

  • The verification for accuracy class III and IIII is valid throughout the country.
  • The verification for accuracy class II valid in the town or village.
  • The verification for accuracy class I is valid only in actual place of use.

We have been studying the gravity zones in Iceland in connection with article 3.3 Gravity zones in WELMEC 2, Issue 3 from October 2000.

We are in the good position to have very accurate values for the gravity all over the country in a report from Orkustofnun (The National Energy Authority).

Reference:
Gunnar Þorbergsson, Ingvar Þór Magnússon, Guðmundur Pálmason 1990: Þyngdarmæligögn og Þyngdarkort af Íslandi. Orkustofnun, OS-90001/JHD-01.

The report describes a survey of the local with anomalies that was carried out in Iceland in the period 1967-1985 in order to produce an improved gravity map of the country. The work was the result of a very close collaboration between the U.S. Defence Mapping Agency, Washington DC and Orkustofnun and Sjómælingar Íslands í Reykjavík.

We choose to express the gravity zones according to article 3.3.2.5 as follows:

  • The reference value for Iceland: gis = 9,82308 m/s2

All gravity values for the country* lie inside the deviation limits Δgis = 0,00112 m/s2.
*No habitation is over h = 100 m.

Iceland is one gravity zone for non automatic weighing instruments (NAWIs) of class III with 3000 division or less and the above mentioned reference value gis = 9,82308 m/s2.

Gravity values have been identified as: 9814000m Gal (9.814 ms2) with maximum variation of +100m Gal (0.001 ms2) to -200m Gal (0.002 ms2).

G Value:

9.814 ms2

  • + .001ms2
  • - .002ms2

However, these values are not prescribed by legislation.

The Irish implementing regulation does not make it an offence to use an instrument outside of its marked weighing range. No classes are designated for a particular application.
