20 May: Measurement science community celebrates ‘World Metrology Day’

The theme in 2022 is ‘Metrology in the Digital Era’

20th May is World Metrology Day, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. Traditionally on this occasion the metrology community celebrates past achievements and contemplates exciting upcoming developments and opportunities.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2022 is Metrology in the Digital Era, reflecting on the way that digital transformation, one of the most exciting trends of the moment, are revolutionising our world. Within a constantly changing global context, the joint efforts of our community have enabled notable advancements, also related to the digital transformation of measurement science and services.

EURAMET & WELMEC

Whether it is about stakeholder engagement, research and innovation, provision to members and associates, or the collaboration with the other pillars of the European quality infrastructure, EURAMET, the European Association of National Metrology Institutes, has taken significant leaps towards the accomplishment of its strategic objectives including those on digital transformation.

WELMEC, the European Cooperation in Legal Metrology, is similarly supporting digital transformation. Pavel Klenovský, WELMEC Chairperson, states:

“By bringing in the legal metrology perspective in various digital technologies such as software in measuring instruments, smart metering and measurement data, WELMEC is fostering consumer protection and Europe-wide acceptance of digital transformation.”

Building on the previous European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP and EMPIR), the recently launched European Partnership on Metrology and the joint research projects, will play a pivotal role in the effective attainment of the digital transformation. From concrete projects at Technical Committee level to broad collaboration prospects under the umbrella of the European Metrology Networks, the metrology community is gradually and steadily covering ground towards the digital horizon.

EURAMET’s Chairperson Jörn Stenger comments:

“Digital transformation is a complex and dynamic industrial and societal process that requires new metrology, for example for the assessment of large sensor networks, standards for data and metadata, or quality assurance of AI-assisted algorithms. The EURAMET community is and has been very active in fostering metrology for digital transformation.”

Accompanying World Metrology Day, EURAMET would like to present an overview of the most prominent realisations and ongoing projects that have been undertaken towards the implementation of digital technologies, including examples from WELMEC.
